Install a PDF viewer on Windows

Paste this into Windows Terminal or Command Prompt:

If winget is missing, install App Installer from Microsoft, then paste again. Official Microsoft links only. The project download page is the other path. For most PCs take SumatraPDF-3.6.1-64-install.exe. A zip also sits on that page if you want a zip. Do not invent a newer number here. File notes sit on PDF reader releases. GitHub Releases is empty for the Windows installer. Do not wait on that empty list for an exe. Take the file from the Download page, or use winget.

How to use a PDF viewer

Install SumatraPDF with the command on this page, or take SumatraPDF-3.6.1-64-install.exe from https://www.sumatrapdfreader.org/download-free-pdf-viewer. A zip also exists on that page if you want a zip.
Open SumatraPDF. You should get a window, not a browser tab.
Open a PDF on this PC. Pick a file you already saved: Documents, Downloads, an attachment you stored, or a copy on USB.
Read, search, or jump pages in the app. Stay in that window. Use the controls the app actually shows.
Close when done. Quitting the window is enough for a reading session. Uninstall is a separate step in Apps if you want the program gone.

What a PDF viewer is on this PC

Windows can store a PDF and still leave you without a simple place to open it besides a browser tab. A PDF viewer is that place. SumatraPDF is one GPL-3.0 program that does it in a desktop window. You install it, you open it, you open a file, you read.

The app does not create the PDF. If the file is missing, broken, or still in an email you never saved, the window has nothing to show. Save the file first. Then open it.

Open a PDF already on this PC

Start with one file you already know, a letter or a form you can recognize. Confirm the window shows pages. Then open the next file. A PDF viewer that has never shown one good page is a bad place to dump a folder of archives.

File Open in the app is the usual path. Double-click can also work after Windows associates the type, if that association is what you want. We will not invent extra menu names. If the picker cannot see the file, you are in the wrong folder. Browse to where you actually saved it.

A PDF on a network share is still a file. Wait until the share is available. A PDF on a USB stick needs the stick plugged in. Ejecting the stick while the file is open can fail the read. Copy it to Documents if you need it after the stick leaves.

Read, search, or jump pages

Reading is the job. Scroll. Next page. Previous page. The app shows pages in its window. Zoom if the type is small. We will not invent a zoom percentage. If you can read the line, you can stop.

Search is for a word you already know is in the file. Open search in the app. Type the word. Step through hits. If the PDF is a scan of a photo of a page, search may find nothing. That is the file, not a missing install. Read with your eyes then, or jump by page number if you know the page.

Jump pages when you have a page number. A table of contents in the PDF, if the file has one, is still inside that file. The viewer shows what the PDF contains. It will not invent a missing outline.

Close when done

Close the window when you finish the file. That ends the reading session. The PDF stays on disk. Closing does not delete it. Closing does not uninstall SumatraPDF.

If you opened the wrong file, close it and open the right one. If you opened a huge file by mistake, close it. You do not need a second PDF viewer to recover. One window, one file at a time is a calm start. Open another file when the first one is away.

First run

After install, open the app once before you hunt a second program named viewer. Open one PDF you trust. Confirm pages appear. If the window is empty, you have not opened a file yet, or the file is empty, or the path failed.

Windows may show a SmartScreen prompt on a first exe. Read the publisher. Prefer the project download page. Winget skips some of that path because Microsoft already listed the package. If winget is missing, the exe is still honest. Do not fetch a second setup from search.

Updates live on the project download page and on winget when the package updates. We do not invent a newer number than 3.6.1 here. Read the download page. Usual Windows pick is still SumatraPDF-3.6.1-64-install.exe. The zip is still a zip of this project.

When the file will not open

A zero-byte file will not show pages. Download it again from the place you got it. A file still named .crdownload or .tmp is not finished. Wait until the name is .pdf.

A file that is actually a Word document renamed to .pdf will confuse you. Look at the real type. A PDF viewer opens PDF. Save a PDF from the program that made it, then open that.

If the app reports the file is damaged, try a second copy of the same document if you have one. This page will not repair bytes. It will not host a recovery tool. If the copy in email still opens on another machine, save a fresh copy here.

School PCs, labs, and uninstall

A lab image may block winget and unknown installers. Then this PDF viewer install is closed for that hour. Do not fetch a wrapper to get around policy. Use a viewer already on the image, or wait until you control the PC.

A borrowed laptop you return in twenty minutes is a bad place to leave SumatraPDF-3.6.1-64-install.exe. Use what is already on the machine, or do not install.

Uninstall is Apps in Windows, or the project uninstall. Quitting the window is not uninstall. If you only wanted to read one file, quit first. If you want the program gone, uninstall. Fetch again from the project download page or winget, not from a wrapper.

x64 installer and zip

Usual Windows pick is SumatraPDF-3.6.1-64-install.exe. The same project download page also lists a zip. They are different packages of the same project. Pick one path. Do not run the installer and unpack the zip on top of each other because the first one felt slow.

It will not create a PDF from a blank page. It will not merge files. It will not host the binary. It will not be a star rating. It will not wait on empty GitHub Releases for an installer. GitHub has the source, not the Windows files.

Where the file lives after you read it

The PDF stays where you opened it, unless you copied it. The viewer reads. It does not move your Documents folder. If you save a copy from the app, you pick the folder. We will not invent a cloud for this project.

Print, if the app and your printer already work, is still a print job on this PC. This article does not add a printer in Settings. If you only needed to read, you can skip print.

Shared machines and the next file

On a family PC, say if you installed a new viewer. On a work PC, follow local policy. If policy blocks unknown exe files, winget may still work, or it may not. If both are blocked, stop. Softonic is still the wrong host in that hour.

Open the next PDF the same way. Install once. Read many files. You do not reinstall for each document. If a new file fails, the file is the suspect, not a missing second viewer.
